Ian Poulter offers PGA Tour Shocking explanation after Scottie Scheffler’s shock arrest
Scottie Scheffler was arrested prior to the second round of this week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla – and the world No. 1 received the well-wishes of LIV Golf’s Ian Poulter
Ian Poulter has offered an explanation to the reasoning behind Scottie Scheffler’s arrest in the build-up to the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club.
The world No. 1 was seen being ushered into a police car in handcuffs in the early hours of Friday morning after making his arrival ahead of round two. Earlier that morning a car accident saw one man – now named as John Mills – killed after being hit by a shuttle bus outside the course entrance.
Around an hour later, Scheffler arrived at Valhalla to begin his prep and in a bid to gain access bypassed traffic, which left him in hot water with the law. He was soon directed into a police car by the authorities and taken to a local station.

In the aftermath LIV Golf star Poulter had his say on incident, speaking on previous experience about what it can be like arriving at an event. “So bizarre hearing the Scottie Scheffler chaos this morning,” he wrote on Instagram. “This is crazy. We as players at multiple tournaments every year are told during traffic around the venue to put Hazard lights on and proceed to the venue if it’s stationary.
“This is as simple as a misunderstanding. And clearly all will be dropped. The End. Hope he goes and plays well now today.”
And play well he did, as just hours after being left in a police cell and having his mug shot photo taken, he was looking back to his best on the golf course. Following his release he was whisked back to Valhalla to make his 10:08 a.m. CT tee time.
And despite the stresses of the morning arrest, the world No. 1 put all of that behind him with a birdie at his first hole of the day. A bogey followed a hole later, but Scheffler was quick to respond with birdie No. 2 at the third.

Four more birdies were added to his card, as the 27-year-old signed for a five-under-par 65 – an all the more impressive achievement considering the circumstances. Scheffler spoke in the aftermath of his round about the arrest, revealing he had to begin his warm-up from a jail cell.

“I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell, that was a first for me,” he revealed. “That a part of my warm-up as I was just sitting here waiting. I started a warm-up because I thought there was a chance I could still go out there and play. I started going through my routine and I was trying to get my heart rate down as much as I could.
“But like I say, I still feel like my head is spinning a little bit. I was fortunate to make it bak out and play some golf today.”
Scheffler also offered his condolences to the family of Mr. Mills who was killed in the crash outside the golf course. “My sympathy goes to the family of Mr. Mills. I can’t imagine what the family is going through this morning,” Scheffler commented.
