J.J. McCarthy Rumors: QB Compared to Kirk Cousins But ‘Teams Aren’t Completely Sold’

J.J. McCarthy’s stock in the 2024 NFL draft has been skyrocketing since Michigan won the College Football Playoff, but there are still some people in the league skeptical about what his ceiling is going to be.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on the Saturday morning edition of SportsCenter that some scouts have compared McCarthy to Kirk Cousins, but some teams “aren’t completely sold” on him:

“He is a hot name right now because the expectation is that quarterbacks go 1-2-3 in the draft and then there are several that still need one picking in the top 15. Minnesota, armed with two first-round picks now, do they move up? The Raiders, Broncos, Giants to an extent, all doing extensive work on the quarterback position as a whole. So, if somebody falls in love with him they could maybe even have to move up as high as No. 4 to Arizona. So, teams aren’t completely sold on McCarthy depending on the team, but I’ve talked to enough scouts who say he’s got high-level ability even though he was asked to be a game manager at Michigan, he has all of the traits to succeed. I’ve heard him compared to from a few scouts as like a stronger, bigger Kirk Cousins. So, if you’re Minnesota, do you want that on a cheaper rookie contract than what you had to pay Kirk Cousins in the past?”

B/R’s NFL scouting department had the Atlanta Falcons selecting McCarthy at No. 8 overall in its most recent mock draft. It’s worth pointing out that mock didn’t include trades was posted before free agency opened, when the Falcons signed Cousins.

NFL Network draft expert Daniel Jeremiah reported last week there is a “STRONG” expectation within the league that four quarterbacks will come off the board in the top six picks.

Caleb Williams seems like a safe bet to go No. 1 overall to the Chicago Bears. Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels will likely be the next two picks to the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots, though it’s unclear which one will be selected first.

The Arizona Cardinals at No. 4 don’t need a quarterback with Kyler Murray on the roster. They seem like the most obvious trade candidate for a team that might value McCarthy highly and doesn’t believe he will be on the board when their pick comes up.

There have already been rumblings that the Minnesota Vikings, who own the No. 11 pick and acquired the No. 23 pick from the Houston Texans, are poised to use that extra draft capital to trade up in order to select McCarthy.

Even though the Vikings just got out of the Cousins era, it wasn’t like that was a bad run for the franchise. He went 50-37-1 and led them to the playoffs twice in six seasons.

If McCarthy ends up having a career similar to what Cousins has had, that would be significantly better than most quarterbacks selected in the first round. You can win with that type of player if the front office can put the right talent around him.
