Dolphins officially signed Kansa Chiefs Super, 4 things to know about new Dolphins TE Jody Fortson

With the Miami Dolphins getting little production from their tight end room last year which consisted of Durham Smythe, Julian Hill and Tyler Kroft, general manager Chris Grier went out and added multiple tight ends in free agency.

One of those tight ends to find a new home in South Florida is Jody Fortson, who should be an intriguing prospect for long-time coach Jon Embree to work with.

Today, we’re going to take a few minutes to share some key information that Dolphins fans should know about one of the newest pieces of their offense for the upcoming year.

Fortson was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2019 following a collegiate career at Valdosta State where he won a Division II national championship in his final season. In his professional career, he’s recorded 14 receptions for 155 yards and four touchdowns while the Chiefs have won three Super Bowls since his arrival.

Injury concerns

Despite being with Kansas City for five seasons, Fortson has only played in 19 career games. He spent the first two seasons on the practice squad, but he’s finished the last three seasons on injured reserve, including missing the entirety of 2023.

Miami has had enough injury issues of their own over the last few seasons. If Fortson is going to make an impact, he must stay healthy.

A goal to be great

Prior to this past season, Fortson spoke to Tyler Dunne of “Go Long TD,” where he voiced his frustration with not putting up the numbers that he believes he’s capable of.

“Obviously we want to win at the highest level,” Fortson said. “But I didn’t sign up to this game to be mediocre. I look at my stats, and I’m not happy with any of them. I’m not going to be complacent and act like these rings are making my career. No. Because that’s not how I see it. I want to be great. Really great.”
