NBA Trade News: San Antonio Spurs officially signs Super Star Point Guard
The San Antonio Spurs could look to add a point guard on the trade market this summer.
The San Antonio Spurs have Victor Wembanyama, and now it’s time to build around him.
Some of the players the Spurs acquired before Wembanyama will make sense for the team long-term, but now that they have their franchise cornerstone, they should do whatever it takes to get players who complement him.
Bleacher Report believes the Spurs, who are still early in their rebuild, should trade some future draft capital to acquire a top-end point guard.
“When Wembanyama has shared the floor with Jones, the Spurs have posted a plus-4.0 net rating. Only six teams have that mark surpassed this season. If that degree of competitiveness is doable with Jones, just imagine what Wembanyama could do with a high-end option at point,” Bleacher Report writes. “That’s what the Spurs have already done by poking around Atlanta for a Trae Young trade. With a draft pick collection as strong as San Antonio’s, this franchise should be able to afford a floor general of Young’s ilk—if not Young himself.”
The Spurs have been linked to Young for a few months, but he isn’t the only point guard who could be available this offseason. There’s also a world where Young stays with the Atlanta Hawks, which would force the Spurs to look in a different direction anyway.
Ultimately, Wembanyama works best with a competent point guard playing alongside him. The Spurs could simply ride with Jones and hope he continues to develop and improve, or San Antonio could push some chips in and try to get better sooner.
