Steelers News: Mike Tomlin Looking to Silence Doubters in 2024

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be entering the 2024 season ready to prove themselves to the rest of the NFL. After another early exit in the playoffs this past season, the Steelers set out to change the narrative over the offseason. The team has reached the playoffs in three of the past four years but Pittsburgh hasn’t won a playoff game since 2017.

In the Steel City, losing doesn’t sit well with the fanbase. People have called for head coach Mike Tomlin’s job over the years but he has maintained at least a competitive spirit to the team. He still has never gone below .500 in his coaching career but Tomlin is looking for more this season.

The veteran head coach believes that his team needs to prove themselves, notably his quarterback room. He enlisted the help of former Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith to run the offense, which should boost their chances.

Pittsburgh signed former Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson, while also trading for Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears. Tomlin’s team has the most talent at the quarterback position since Ben Roethlisberger was around, but they still have many questions to answer.

“It’s going really well,” Tomlin said about Smith and the QBs. “All three guys, to be really transparent, are somewhat scalded. They got something to prove professionally. But we as a collective feel the same way. We have something to prove, and I just think that is a good frame of mind to be in as individuals and as a collective as we prepare ourselves for the 2024 season. It’s not fun to relocate or get fired or things of that nature. But as competitors, it always motivates us in the right way, and I’m excited about working with the men that you mentioned. And we as a collective have got some questions to answer, so I’m excited about that, as well.”

Wilson will be looking to turn things around after a few poor years with the Denver Broncos. He has seen his game turn to inconsistency but is determined to get back to being himself with Pittsburgh. Last year with the Broncos, Wilson threw for 3,070 yards with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Pittsburgh believes they can maximize the skillset of Wilson by giving him a strong offensive line to work with. The Steelers showed their devotion to Wilson this season by drafting multiple linemen in the early parts of the 2024 NFL Draft. Beefing up the guys in front of Wilson should help but it’ll ultimately be on the quarterback to show what he can do.

For Tomlin, he knows the clock is ticking on him to find success in Pittsburgh. The organization’s last Super Bowl title came in 2009 and they haven’t even been back to the big game. But if things all go as they should for the Steelers, they believe that 2024 can be different out on the field.
